Loving the new ride masha’Allah tabarkAllah .. had no idea what good breaks felt like up to this point lol. I was in the car this morning just checking out different parts and I found myself feeling surprised by every little detail .. secret compartment here, an ash-tray there, perfectly ergonomic steering wheel .. you name it, the smallest thing was making me excited. I thought to myself how this sense of joy (X infinity) is what the believers will experience in Jannah, inshaAllah! All the hints and visual depictions of Jannah we come across in the Qur’an will finally come to life. What’s different is that the suspense of finding new features in a car, or anything new in this life, is that the excitement runs out and we suddenly find ourselves going after the next thing. It rarely lasts except if we continuously make shukr to Allah ‘azzawajal. Powerful ayah in Surah Hadid reminds us of what this life really amounts to:
“Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children, as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers, evil-doers), and (there is) Forgiveness from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the believers, good-doers), whereas the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment.” [57:20]
In childhood, we are fixated on play and amusement up until adolescence when we start to care about what others think and try to find out what sets us apart. Over time, the focus turns to $$ and kids and for many people, their sense of self starts to depend on these two things. When life seems to be going well for us, we feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction but ultimately, every material aspect of life “turns yellow” after some time .. it ages, doesn’t surprise us or excite us anymore, and we turn our attention to the next thing. Before, we wanted nothing more than that one thing (degree, car, school, job, house, etc.). A little reflection shows us that the seeker and the sought are both weak .. the only thing that remains consistent and strong is the remembrance of Allah. Through dhikr of Allah, the believers attain true satisfaction.
