This is post number 8 in the Divine Speech Series. Discussing “hearts that don’t truly understand, eyes that don’t see, and ears that don’t hear”. Some points in the notes were side notes from the discussions but iA I hope you understand. =)
“And surely, We have created many of the jinns and mankind for Hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not, they have eyes wherewith they see not, and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray; those! They are the heedless ones.” [7:179]
Hearts that don’t truly understand, eyes that don’t see, ears that don’t hear
i. Alladhina yu’minoona bil ghayb—starts with the beyond. Knowledge beyond the 5 senses.
ii. Composites (2)–soul leaves the body when we sleep, iman in our heart-unseen. Seen vs. unseen dimension. Hearts become hard: unseen
iii. Unseen heart: location of faith (iman), remembrance of Allah (dhikr), ayaat of Quran, tranquility, emotions–fear, love, anger.
iv. We see the world and understand the world through our heart.
v. Hearts function was remembrance.
vi. Relevalation in our hearts:
vii. “Remind with the Quran”–reminder, remembrance, a means of reminder.
viii. Two kinds of ayaat
1. Ayaat of revalation
2. Ayaat of creation.
3. Connection is that these remind of those and those of these. (get it?)
ix. Allah compares the heedless humans to even worse than cattle.
x. “He used to be happy in the company of his family, more beloved than Allah, His messenger, Mujahidoon, etc…you just wait” board says, why wait?
1. The Sh. was telling us about this billboard he saw while driving. There’s a happy family standing behind a house and the board was advertising Riba. The catch line on there was “why wait?” (for the perfect life basically) and he remembered the ayah where Allah (swa) says that if this life, this money, your family, etc. is more beloved to you than Allah, His Messenger, and the righteous, then you just wait…(the wrath of Allah) May Allah protect us from falling into the desires of this world.
xi. When a child is born, he is always looking up. When a man gets old, his back makes him look at the ground, where he is headed.
xii. Outside world is a means of making you think about the Quran. Real dhikr. They have hearts but they don’t understand with those hearts.
xiii. Roots of tree are deep, good deeds are the branches–when we go in the ground, we will also be brought up.
xiv. Newton: all matter cannot be destroyed or created. Blasphemy?
1. As Muslims, we believe that everything in its entirety was once created and everything in its entirety will one day be destroyed, right? Yea, so Newton was wrong.
xv. People trying to define the unseen with seen terms. That is the problem.
